MyCQU - Student Visa Conditions

Student Visa Conditions

As a student visa holder, it is your responsibility to be aware of your visa conditions. Failure to comply with these conditions could result in the cancellation of your visa. These conditions include (but are not limited to):

Conditions with regards to your studies

  • Complete your course within the duration specified on your CoE,
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress,
  • Attend at least 80% of your classes,
  • Remain with the principal education provider for six (6) calendar months, unless issued a letter of release from the provider to attend another institution,
  • Remain enrolled in a registered course which has a CRICOS number

Conditions about working

  • You cannot work for more than 40 hours per fortnight when your course is in session.
  • You can work for more than 40 hours per fortnight during official vacation periods
  • You cannot start paid work until you have started your course in Australia.

Updating Personal Details and OSHC

  • Maintain approved Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your student visa,
  • Update your address in MyCentre within 7 days of your arrival in Australia or any subsequent address changes.

Please visit the Department of Home Affairs website for a full list of student visa conditions and work conditions for student visa holders.

Maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress As per the above conditions, you are putting your visa at risk by not maintaining satisfactory academic progress. CQUniversity monitors your academic progression at the end of each term through our Monitoring Academic Progress (MAP) program. You will be identified as not achieving satisfactory progress if you:

  1. fail more than 50% of your units in a term
  2. fail the same unit twice or more

If you do not achieve satisfactory progress, you will receive a notification to your student email account in the week following Certification of Grades. It is important that you action the steps in the notification within the designated time frames. Visit the MAP website for more information about this support program.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, CQUniversity is working alongside the frameworks set out by the Australian government.

The Australian Government has recently updated its Student Visa advice:

  1. The Government will recommence granting student visas in all locations lodged outside Australia. This means when borders re-open, students will already have visas and be able to make arrangements to travel.
  2. International students will be able to lodge a further student visa application free of charge, if they are unable to complete their studies within their original visa validity due to COVID-19.

Note: When applying for a COE extension the University will also assess your eligibility for waiving the visa application fee (FORM  1545).

  1. Current student visa holders studying online outside Australia due to COVID-19 will be able to use that study to count towards the Australian study requirement for a post-study work visa.
  2. Graduates who held a student visa will be eligible to apply for a post-study work visa outside Australia if they are unable to return due to COVID-19.
  3. Additional time will be given for applicants to provide English language results where COVID-19 has disrupted access to these services.

Note: New students must first apply for their visa and have it granted prior to starting their studies online, if they wish to have the portion of their studies undertaken offshore count towards their post-study work visa.

Any new student who has commenced their studies online prior to having their visa granted will not have their studies offshore counted towards their post-study work visa.

Keep up-to-date with the latest travel restrictions.

FORM 1545 COVId-19 impacted students

The Department of Home Affairs are supporting students Impacted by COVID 19 for a nil visa application charge for a new Student (Subclass 500 / 485) visa application if they are unable to complete their approved course of study within the original visa validity due to COVID-19. To enable this for students CQUniversity must assess the student’s eligibility for a Form 1545.

The Following information is listed on the Home Affairs Website:

We will waive the visa application fee to allow students to lodge a further student visa application to complete their study. This will be available to students who held a student visa on or after 1 February 2020 and who couldn’t complete their course within their original visa validity due to the impacts of COVID-19. This includes students who:

  • deferred their study as they were unable to enter Australia due to travel restrictions
  • were forced to reduce to a part-time study load
  • were unable to complete their work-based training and/or placements

Students must apply for this visa online, and can be in or outside Australia when they apply.

  • This waiver only applies to the visa application fee.
