MyCQU - Counselling


The Counselling team provide free and confidential support for all CQUni students.

Counsellors can help with personal issues that may impede your academic progress and your personal development. They will also help you to acquire effective study skills like motivation and time management.

Our goal is to see students succeed in their studies, and to promote personal resilience and wellness.

The CQUni Student Counselling service Triage team are available from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Friday. Counsellors are currently providing telehealth services, including appointments via phone, Zoom, and email.

Counselling FAQs

To help you understand more about counselling we have prepared some frequently asked questions.

What counselling services are available?

Personal and Academic Counselling services are provided to all domestic and international students, at all study locations including online study.

An appointment can be arranged by face-to-face (where possible), by telephone or by email using the contact details above.

Letters of support

In the event that adverse circumstances negatively impact on your studies, you may be seeking a letter of support for your lecturer. Our normal procedure is to provide letters of support ONLY to students who are clients of this service. So if you are not already a client of the Counselling service, please bring any medical, legal or other evidence to support your situation.

We will discuss and clarify your circumstances with you, and identify the impact on your studies for the term.  A Counsellor will work with you to decide on the most appropriate option, which may include us supporting your request for an extension, withdrawal without academic penalty, deferral of an exam, or a request for special consideration in an examination.

However, if you are seeking support due to a medical condition, you will not need to see us. Obtain supporting evidence from your Medical Practitioner and attach a copy of that documentation to your academic application.

Withdrawing without Academic Penalty

CQUniversity's policy for Withdrawal Without Academic Penalty states the criteria that apply to this process. We are most likely to support your withdrawal request if you have experienced an unforeseen and recent event, which is outside your control. It should be of a serious nature and generally not have existed before the Census date (usually about week 3-4 of each term).

Remember we are unable to provide support unless you are previously known to us, are a client of this service or if you can provide verification of the event from another source. Please bring any medical, legal or other evidence to support your situation.

Deferring an exam

The Counsellor may support your request for a deferred exam if it will be detrimental for you to complete the exam on the given date. If you are not a client of the counselling service please bring any medical, legal or other evidence to support your situation.

Your School will decide whether to grant a Deferral, based on the documentation they receive from you. You may not know whether your exam has been deferred until after the exam date. To make this application you must complete the Deferral of Exam Form. This form requires witness by a commissioner of Declaration or Justice of the Peace.

What if my position is urgent?

Make sure you inform reception if your situation is urgent. Priority appointments are set aside for this situation.

What usually happens in a counselling session?

Counselling sessions may last 30 minutes or longer depending on the situation you wish to discuss. During the counselling session, you have the opportunity to describe what is concerning you and what you have already tried to do to help.

The Counsellor may make a number of suggestions that you may like to consider and do before the next session. If extra contacts are required you will be scheduled an appointment for future sessions usually from 4 to 6 sessions.

Is counselling only for the mentally ill?

Mental illness has many different aspects. For example, Anxiety and Depression are mental illnesses that are quite common in the student population. Often these illnesses are stress-related and are of short duration. The sooner such a person accesses help the sooner they are likely to recover.

However, most students who attend counselling seek help to be better stress managers, better problem solvers and better organised in their busy lives. Stressful experiences can arise from a variety of stressors like study, personal, family and relationships issues. In short, people who seek counselling can present for any reason that is creating a negative impact on their study life.

Will the Counsellor help me decide whether to leave/stay at uni?

CQUniversity values the enrolment of each student. As our logo states, we wish to assist you to Be what you want to Be. With that aim in mind, the Counsellor will help you to decide what option is the best for you. Then we will help you to evaluate the consequences of that decision and whether the timing is right for you to take that action.

If you want to explore changes to your study course you will want to discuss whether to drop a unit, to change courses, to defer for a certain period or to leave study. The Counsellor may also refer you to your other areas of the University where you can get further advice and/or assist you to negotiate your option if this is necessary.

How do I know my information will be kept confidential?

All counselling records are kept in a secure electronic system or in secure filing cabinets. None of your information will be disclosed to a third party without your expressed permission (in writing). This rule applies to such people as a lecturer, doctor, family or friends. In fact, under our rules of confidentiality, we are not even entitled to divulge your name to another without your permission.

Unless you wish to tell other people that you are receiving counselling there is no need for anyone else but yourself to know.

Will this counselling go on my student record?

Records of the Student Success Centre - whether for personal and careers counselling or equity - are kept completely separate from all other university records and cannot be accessed by other areas of the University. A concerned lecturer/ friend etc may refer you for counselling but the only information we will provide is whether or not you accepted the referral.

What if I don't want to continue counselling?

If you have made an appointment, either by telephone, email or in person, and then are unable to keep that appointment please phone and let us know. At the first appointment, your Counsellor will probably work out with you to attend a number of sessions (usually 4 to 6). However, you are able to withdraw from that agreement at any time, for any reason. Sometimes it takes just one session for your old coping ability to return! We only ask that you phone reception on 07 49 30 9456 and cancel the next appointment as we can offer that time to another person on our waiting list.

Covers information and fact sheets and self-help tools on feeling suicidal, concerns about someone else and bereavement from suicide. Information for self-harm also available.

Beyond Blue

National response to reduce the prevalence of depression in Australia.


Brave Program – Free Anxiety Self Help – Beyondblue for youth
A free online self-help, evidenced based program that has been proven to prevent and treat anxiety in young people and children. Programs for both 8-12 & 12 – 17 age groups.

The course provides up to 10 sessions and can be used on your computer, tablet, can be worked through at your own pace and not monitored by anyone.

Programs for parents also available.


Moodgym – Beyondblue
Moodgym is a free, confidential and interactive web program designed to prevent depression. It consists of 5 modules, an interactive game, anxiety and depression assessments, downloadable relaxation audio, a workbook and feedback assessment.

Moodgym covers principles of cognitive behavioural therapy, works through dealing with stress, relationship breakdowns, teaching relaxation and meditation techniques.


Free, relates to a wide range of adult users and acceptability with adolescents.

e-couch is an interactive self- help program/s for social anxiety, generalised anxiety, depression, divorce & separation and bereavement/loss.

Each sub program begins with “armchair” scenarios which provides information about symptoms, diagnosis, getting help and treatments.

Users can read through information and choose from a range of self-help “toolkits” to draw on a range of therapies including CBT, physical activity, mindfulness and relaxation.


Smiling Mind – Mindfulness Meditation App
Provides a free app to download for all age groups ranging from 7yrs to adult.

Mindfulness guided meditation programs are designed to assist people in dealing with the stress, pressure and challenges of everyday life.

Developed by psychologists and educators to help bring balance to people’s lives.


The Butterfly Foundation- Eating Disorders- prevention & Treatment
Provides online support with online information and chat line support groups for people suffering from eating disorders and negative body image issues and their families. Telephone support also available on 1800 33 4673.  


Black Dog Institute 
Expert information on depression and Bipolar Disorder for the general public as well as professionals, including information on getting help for mood disorders, suggestions on ways of staying well, and detailed information about the Institute's research activities.


An online support group for people affected by depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders. It aims to reduce stigma, and to provide support, hope and opportunities for sharing successful coping strategies. The group is run as a moderated bulletin board with strict protocols to enhance safety and privacy.


anxietyonline provides psycho-educational information about anxiety disorders, free automated psychological assessment and self-help treatment programs, plus low cost therapist-assisted programs over 12 weeks.


Reach Out
A national online youth suicide prevention program.


Sane Helpline
Sane Helpline provides information about symptoms, treatments, medications, where to go for support and help for carers. Easy to read pamphlets and other information are also sent out on request. SANE also provides a Helpline Online service. You can use this to ask questions about mental illness and related topics.


A national online and telephone mental health support for young people and their friends 12 – 25 yrs. Provides a confidential and secure space where young people can chat, email or speak with qualified mental health professional.


Student Counselling is supported by funds from the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). All SSAF funds are used to enhance or extend student services and facilities in accordance with unding guidelines. Find out more about SSAF funding allocation.
