First Time Users - Getting Started with Zoom

What is Zoom?

Zoom video conferencing is a cloud-based video conferencing and online meeting platform, CQUniversity uses Zoom as the platform to interact with students online in real-time.

How do I join a Zoom session?

There are two ways you can join a Zoom session depending on how it has been set up by the staff member.

  • Option 1 - Most of the time you will be required to Join a Zoom session through Moodle. On your Moodle, site find the relevant Zoom link. It will generally look like

Click on the link and then select 'Join Session'. Follow the onscreen prompts to join the Zoom meeting.

  • Option 2 - Sometimes you may be sent a direct link to the Zoom session or the direct Link is posted on Moodle. It will usually look something like

Click on the link to join the meeting and follow the onscreen prompts to join the Zoom meeting.

Can I join a Zoom meeting on a iPhone, iPad or Android device or can I only join Zoom on a Window or Mac computer?

Zoom works across Windows & Mac computers as well as most Apple and Android mobile devices.

If you would like to join a Zoom meeting on a iPhone, iPad or Android device, install the 'Zoom App' from the Apple App Store or Android Google Play store before clicking on the meeting link.

I have joined the meeting, how do I set up my Microphone, Camera and Speaker?

Once you have joined the Zoom meeting here is information about the basic functions.

  • The microphone icon allows you to mute and unmute
    - The ^ icon next to the microphone icon allows you to choose your sound output and microphone input options
  • The Camera icon allows you to turn your video on and off
    -   The ^ icon next to the camera icon allows you to choose your camera options

Can I join a test Zoom session?

Yes! Zoom has a test session function so you can join a test session to make sure your settings are correct. Click here to join it and test your camera, microphone and sound settings.

I am required to deliver a presentation on Zoom, can I share my screen?

Yes, if you are required to share your screen on Zoom.

Once you have joined the Zoom session.

  1. Click the green Share Screen icon at the bottom on the window.
  2. A window will then open showing a choice of content to share. Select the application you want to share. If sharing a video, tick the share computer sound button
  3. Select the Share button.

Can I create my own Zoom session for a study group?

Yes, students are able to schedule meetings to collaborate with other students online.

1. Head to cqu.zoom.us
2. Select sign in and log in with your CQUni student number and password
3. Follow these steps to schedule a meeting
